Pedro the Conejo is a Flemish Giant breed of rabbit. He was born on August 10, 2001, and he weighs 14 pounds. His Mother, Faith, weighed 18 pounds and his Father, Remington, weighed 15 pounds. The champions of the breed will reach 24 pounds. This breed is frequently put on exhibit by the breeders at the local county fairs which is where I met Pedro when he was just a small bunny. This breed of rabbit comes in the colors of black, white, brown, and a steel color (blue gray). The breed was originally developed for their meat. Rabbit is not a bad tasting meat and can be obtained in local speciality butcher shops. No - - - I am not going to eat Pedro. Flemish Giants, especially the males, are noted for their docile personality and they quickly become a tame pet that will follow you around and come when you call them. Pedro the Conejo has never been confined in a cage and his home is having the free run of a large fenced backyard. He is plagued with chronic fleas, requires grooming with a fine tooth comb, and gets an occasional bath with flea shampoo. He eats about one full cup of regular bunny food each day and one or two large carrots. He will graze on the grass in the back yard and eat the tenants' special potted plants preferring the expensive orchards. He gets regular treats of sliced apples, grapes, and his very special treat - - - Wheat Thin Crackers! |
